Land Use
Equestrian Trails Organization
We have continued to make progress on forming an organization to represent trail riding in Maine. As I previously reported this organization would work the same way that the Maine Snowmobile Association or ATV Maine works. It would give all trail riders a single voice. The group has decided on Maine Equestrian Trails Alliance as a name.
I recently attended a meeting of
META at the University of Maine at Orono. (The meeting was held
there to accommodate participants coming from the northern part
of our state.) I am very impressed with the progress that was made
at the meeting. The first order of business was electing officers.
Jaye Winkel will be the first META President. Jaye is very active
in the equestrian community. She is the organizer of the web site
mainehorse.com and she is the President of the Hollis Equestrian
Park. (I checked out the web site for the Hollis Park and it looks
beautiful! Has anyone ridden there? For more info check the link
from the mainehorse.com web site) The second order of business was
to appoint members to different committees that advise the governor
and legislature on land use issues. The first committee is the Sportsman’s
and Landowners Advisory Committee. The second committee is the newly
formed Governor’s Public Lands Access Task Force. Membership
on both of these very important committees will ensure that equestrians
have a voice from now on in land use issues. Lastly a member of
our group will become involved in the Recreational Trail Grant Program.
This is the program that helps snowmobilers and ATVers get new trails.
It’s time for us equestrians to join the mix!
The next order of business will be to finalize our formal mission statement and by-laws. Then we will be on to fund raising which will be a major factor in the future of the organization. Snowmobilers and ATVers contribute to their organization by registering their machines. Equestrians of course do not register their horses so we will have to come up with some other way fund the Alliance.
